Exp5: Hardening Windows Operating System

Aim: To harden the Window operating System by adjusting the System Settings Functions to Harden the OS: 1. How to Disable Automatic Login: a. Press Win+R, enter “netplwiz“, which will open the “User Accounts” window.Netplwizisa Windows utility tool for managing user accounts. b. Check the option for “Users must enter a username and password to use this computer” and click Apply. c. Restart your computer and the system will prompt you to enter your pass word at the login screen. 2. How to Set a password with your screensaver. a. Set the screensaver pass word in WindowsVista,7, 8,10,and11 b. Press the -Windows key type Change screen saver, then press Enter. c. In the Screensaver Settings window, check the box On resume, display log on screen(A). d. Click Apply(B),then OK(C).

3. To turn on the firewall Go to Start and open Control Panel. Select System and Security > Windows Defender Firewall.

Choose Turn Windows Firewall on or off. Select Turn on Windows Firewall for do main, private, and public network settings. 4. To disable the remote access a. Type “remote settings” into the Cortana search box. Select “Allow remote access to your computer”.... b. Check “Don't Allow Remote Connections” to this Computer. You've now disabled remote access to your computer. 5. To install the antivirus protection tools Turn Microsoft Defender Anti virus real-time protection on or off a. Select Start>Settings>Update & Security>Windows Security and then Virus & threat protection>

Manage settings.... b. Switch the Real-time protection setting to Off and choose Yes to verify. 6. To enable the auto updated for the operating system that you use Windows 10 routinely updates your computer by default. You simply need to check to see if it's occurring by following the guidelines below.

a. Select Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update from the Start menu.

b. If you want to directly check for updates, select "Check for Updates".

c. After that, choose Automatic under "Choose how updates are installed" under Advanced Options.

7. To set up file back up Set Up File History inWindows10

InWindows10,click the Start button and go to Settings>Update & Security>Backup. Under Back up using File History, click Add a drive. Assuming you've connected a workable back up device, Windows displays a list of them. Select the location you wish to use for your backups. 8. To turn On the encryption and To turn on device encryption a. Sign into Windows with an administrator account (you may have to sign out and back into switch accounts).... b. Select the Start button, then select Settings>Update & Security>Device encryption.... c. If device encryption is turned off, select Turn on. 9. To set up the user accounts Change a local user account to an administrator account a. Select Start>Settings>Accounts. b. Under Family& other users, select the account owner name(you should see "Local account" below the name),then select Change account type. c. Under Account type, select Administrator, and then select OK. d. Sign in with the new administrator account. 10. Set up password manager a. Download a Password Manager Program. I would start on your desktop computer since that’s going to be the easiest to set things up on.... b. Create a Master Password for Your Vault....

c. Start Logging in to Your Accounts....

d. Begin to Change Your Passwords.

Result: Hence the System Settings has been perfectly done to harden the operating Systems.
